Talent Time (才能の時間 Sainō no Jikan) is the thirteenth episode of the Assassination Classroom anime series. The episode first aired on April 17, 2015.

Overview[]

A new instructor named Akira Takaoka comes to Class E, and the students instantly like him. He presents himself as a father figure. However, his true nature steadily begins to reveal itself as he increases the severity of the assassin's training.

Summary[]

Three months into the assassination training, Karasuma notices everyone's improvement in knifing skills. He pays particular attention to Isogai and Maehara for their quick reflexes, especially when paired together; Karma for his secretive but mischievous nature; and Okano and Kataoka for their unpredictable athletic abilities.

At one point, Karasuma senses an attack from behind, only to find it's Nagisa. Despite Nagisa's weak profile, Karasuma feels an ominous presence. Korosensei also notices this. After training ends, Karasuma declines Kurahashi's offer to join the class for social time and instead meets an old acquaintance outside the classroom—Akira Takaoka. He introduces Takaoka to the class, announcing that Takaoka will take over PE while Karasuma focuses on office work. The students quickly take a liking to Takaoka due to his light-hearted personality and the sack of sweets he brings.

The next day, Karasuma briefs Irina and Korosensei about Takaoka, noting that they served together in the elite corps of the Ministry of Defense, where Takaoka trained new recruits. As Karasuma reflects on Takaoka's methods, he notices something disturbing in a photo of Takaoka's recruits—bruises and tied hands—leaving him horrified.

Outside, Takaoka announces a new rigorous training schedule from noon to 9 p.m., leaving little time for schooling or socializing. When Maehara protests, Takaoka knees him in the chest, shocking the class. Takaoka demands absolute obedience while forcing a fatherly demeanor. She refuses when he asks Kanzaki for agreement, stating she prefers Karasuma's teachings. Takaoka slaps her so hard that she falls to the ground in response.

Karasuma and Korosensei intervene, but they cannot overrule Takaoka. Korosensei tells Karasuma he's counting on him to take Takaoka down. Meanwhile, Takaoka seethes with hatred for Karasuma, seeing this as his chance to topple him.

The class struggles with 300 squats until Kurahashi pleads for Karasuma's help, which Takaoka overhears. Takaoka, eager to assert dominance, proposes a challenge: Karasuma must choose a student to fight Takaoka with a real knife while he remains unarmed. If the student wins, Takaoka will leave; otherwise, his authority will be absolute.

Despite his reservations, Karasuma chooses Nagisa, sensing his latent assassin potential. Takaoka and Irina are skeptical, but Korosensei reassures Irina to trust the decision. Nagisa accepts the challenge, trusting Karasuma and seeking to avenge Kanzaki and Maehara.

As they face off, Takaoka assumes Nagisa will hesitate with a real knife, making it easy to win. However, Nagisa approaches him calmly as if "walking to school." In a swift move, he maneuvers behind Takaoka and feints a neck slash, shocking Takaoka. With Takaoka paralyzed by fear, Nagisa pins him to the ground and holds the knife to his throat. Everyone is stunned, and Karasuma realizes Nagisa is a natural-born assassin, questioning whether to nurture or suppress this talent.

Nagisa sheepishly asks if he should've used the knife's blunt edge, and Korosensei declares the match over. Korosensei warns Karasuma about the dangers of using real knives, though Karasuma knows Korosensei would've intervened if needed. The class congratulates Nagisa, with Maehara playfully slapping him to ensure it's truly him.

Takaoka, furious, demands a rematch, but Nagisa calmly states that while the class appreciates Takaoka's intentions, they prefer Karasuma's professionalism and Korosensei's guidance. Takaoka tries to strike Nagisa, but Karasuma blocks the punch. He vows to petition for Takaoka's removal.

Just then, Chairman Asano arrives and dismisses Takaoka for using violence to instill fear. Asano reminds Takaoka that he controls the school, not the Ministry of Defense. Takaoka leaves in shame, and the class celebrates having Karasuma as their PE teacher again. They convince him to treat them, and Irina cheekily swipes his wallet to join the fun. As the class drags Karasuma away, Korosensei pleads to join in, much to their amusement. The episode ends with Korosensei begging, crawling on his tentacles, while the students laugh.

Characters[]

Episode Notes[]

  • In the original, as Takaoka was leaving, he screamed the last "Kuso" out of anger. But, as he was leaving, he was crying in the dub.

Differences between the Manga[]

  • The manga depicted Takaoka's vision of a muscled version of Nagisa and Kayano as a result of his training and Korosensei and Irina's comical ulterior motives for objecting to Takaoka's rigorous schedule. These have been cut from the episode.
  • Irina's reaction to Kotaro Takebayashi's answer, "You're our bitch" is added, which is not present in the manga.
